When Should My Baby See the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends scheduling your baby's first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months after the first tooth appears—whichever comes first.

Starting early helps us monitor your baby's oral health, prevent cavities, and answer your questions about teething, feeding, thumb sucking, fluoride, and healthy habits.

Why Is the First Visit Important?

Early dental visits help:

o   Monitor healthy tooth and jaw development

o   Prevent early childhood cavities

o   Build positive dental experiences from the start

o   Give parents personalized guidance on caring for their baby's smile

What to Expect

Your baby's first visit is usually short, gentle, and focused on education.

During the visit, we will:

o   Examine your baby's teeth, gums, and mouth

o   Check normal tooth eruption and development

o   Discuss brushing, fluoride, nutrition, and bottle or pacifier habits

o   Answer any questions you have about your baby's oral health

Parent-Friendly FAQ

My baby only has one tooth. Should I still schedule a visit?

Yes! The AAPD recommends the first dental visit by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts.

Will my baby need X-rays?

Usually not. X-rays are only taken when they are needed to evaluate your child's oral health.

How can I prepare my baby?

Choose a time when your baby is well-rested, bring their favorite comfort item if needed, and stay positive. Your child can sense your confidence, which helps create a happy first dental experience.
