Why Screen Time Can Increase the Risk of Cavities

Many children enjoy a snack while watching TV, playing video games, or using a tablet. While screen time itself doesn't cause cavities, frequent snacking during screen time can increase your child's risk of tooth decay.

Why Does This Happen?

Every time your child eats or drinks something other than water, bacteria in the mouth produce acids that weaken tooth enamel.

Normally, saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralize these acids. However, when children slowly snack throughout a movie or while using a device, their teeth are exposed to repeated acid attacks without enough time to recover.

It's not just what they eat, it's how often they snack.

Common Screen-Time Snacks

Some popular snacks can stick to the teeth and increase the risk of cavities, including:

o   Fruit snacks and gummies

o   Crackers and chips

o   Granola bars

o   Dried fruit

o   Sweetened yogurt

o   Juice, sports drinks, and flavored beverages

Smile-Smart Tips

o   Enjoy snacks before screen time instead of during

o   Offer water instead of juice or sugary drinks

o   Avoid grazing, finish the snack, then put it away

o   Choose tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, fresh fruits, vegetables, or yogurt with little or no added sugar

o   Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and visit the dentist regularly

Parent-Friendly FAQ

Does screen time cause cavities?

No. Screen time doesn't cause cavities, but frequent snacking while using screens can increase the risk of tooth decay.

Is one snack during a movie okay?

Yes! The concern is continuous grazing over a long period rather than enjoying one snack and finishing it.

What's the best drink during screen time?

Water is the best choice because it helps rinse the mouth and does not contribute to cavities
