Tooth Extractions

What Is It?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that can no longer be safely or predictably maintained. While preserving natural teeth is always our goal, there are situations where removing a tooth is the healthiest option to protect your child's oral health and development.

Extractions may be recommended due to severe decay, infection, trauma, orthodontic needs, or when a tooth is preventing normal eruption of permanent teeth. Our team carefully evaluates every treatment option and recommends extraction only when it is in your child's best interest.

At Spark Pediatric Dentistry of Illinois, we strive to make the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible while helping your child maintain a healthy smile.

Parent-Friendly FAQ

Why does my child need a tooth extraction?

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth cannot be predictably saved or when removing the tooth is the healthiest option for your child's oral health and development.

Can the tooth be saved instead?

Whenever possible, we prefer to preserve natural teeth. Before recommending an extraction, we carefully evaluate other treatment options such as fillings, crowns, or pulp therapy.

Will the procedure hurt?

Your child's comfort is our priority. Local anesthesia is used to ensure the area is numb during treatment. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and usually improves within a few days.

What happens after the tooth is removed?

A small blood clot forms in the area to begin the healing process. We will provide detailed instructions to help your child heal comfortably and safely.

Will my child need a space maintainer?

Possibly. If a baby tooth is removed before it is naturally ready to fall out, a space maintainer may be recommended to help preserve room for the permanent tooth.

How long does healing take?

Most children recover quickly. Initial healing usually occurs within a few days, while complete healing of the area takes longer.

What can my child eat after an extraction?

Soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, pasta, mashed potatoes, and soup are often recommended for the first few days. We will provide specific post-operative instructions based on your child's treatment.

Is it normal to see some bleeding after an extraction?

Yes. A small amount of oozing is normal during the first several hours after treatment. We will review what to expect and when to contact our office.
