Fluoride Varnish

What Is It?

Fluoride varnish is a safe and effective preventive treatment that helps strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. It is applied directly to the teeth as a thin protective coating and works by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugars.

Fluoride varnish is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help protect growing smiles. It is commonly recommended as part of a comprehensive preventive dental care plan.

At Spark Pediatric Dentistry of Illinois, we believe that preventing cavities is always better than treating them. Fluoride varnish is one of the many tools we use to help keep your child's smile healthy and strong.

Who Can Benefit?

Fluoride varnish may be recommended for:

o   Infants and toddlers

o   Children with primary (baby) teeth

o   School-age children and teenagers

o   Children at increased risk for cavities

o   Children with a history of tooth decay

o   Children with orthodontic appliances

o   Children who would benefit from additional cavity protection

Treatment recommendations are individualized based on your child's age, oral health, and cavity risk.

What to Expect

Applying fluoride varnish is quick, easy, and painless. During the appointment, we will:

o   Examine your child's teeth

o   Dry the teeth as needed

The varnish hardens quickly after application, allowing the fluoride to remain in contact with the teeth and provide additional protection.

Fluoride varnish may help strengthen areas of very early enamel demineralization and slow the progression of early decay. More advanced cavities typically require additional treatment.

How is fluoride varnish different from Curodont® or Resin Infiltration?

Fluoride varnish helps strengthen enamel and protect teeth from future decay. Curodont® and Resin Infiltration are designed to manage specific early lesions and may be recommended in certain situations. During your child's examination, we will determine which treatment is most appropriate for their needs.
