Resin Infiltration

What Is It?
Resin Infiltration is a minimally invasive treatment used to help stop the progression of very early cavities and improve the appearance of certain white spot lesions on teeth. The treatment works by allowing a special dental resin to penetrate and strengthen weakened enamel before a cavity progresses and requires a filling.
Unlike traditional fillings, Resin Infiltration does not require removal of healthy tooth structure. It is designed to preserve the natural tooth while helping prevent early decay from advancing.
At Spark Pediatric Dentistry of Illinois, we are committed to providing conservative treatment options whenever possible to help preserve healthy smiles.
Who Can Benefit?
Resin Infiltration may be recommended for:
o Children with very early cavities between teeth
o Children with white spot lesions caused by enamel demineralization
o Patients with early enamel changes following orthodontic treatment
o Children who would benefit from a minimally invasive treatment approach
o Patients with early areas of decay that have not yet formed a cavity
Not all cavities are candidates for Resin Infiltration. During your child's examination, we will determine whether this treatment is appropriate based on the stage and location of the lesion.
Benefits
o Minimally invasive treatment
o No drilling required in most cases

What to Expect
Resin Infiltration is a simple and comfortable procedure that is usually completed in a single visit. During the appointment, we will:
o Evaluate the affected area
o Isolate and prepare the tooth
o Apply a special conditioning gel to the enamel
o Apply the infiltrating resin
o Harden the resin using a curing light
o Polish the treated area as needed
Most children tolerate the procedure very well because it is minimally invasive and typically does not require drilling or anesthesia.

Parent-Friendly FAQ
What is Resin Infiltration used for?
Resin Infiltration is used to treat very early cavities and certain white spot lesions before they progress into larger areas of decay.
Does Resin Infiltration hurt?
No. Most children find the procedure very comfortable, and drilling or injections are typically not needed.
Can Resin Infiltration replace a filling?
Resin Infiltration is designed for early stages of tooth decay. Once a cavity has progressed and formed a larger defect in the tooth, a filling or other restorative treatment may still be necessary.
How do I know if my child is a candidate?
During your child's dental examination, we will evaluate the location and severity of the lesion to determine whether Resin Infiltration is an appropriate treatment option.
Will Resin Infiltration make white spots disappear?
Many white spot lesions become less noticeable after treatment. However, results can vary depending on the size, depth, and cause of the lesion.
Is Resin Infiltration safe for children?
Yes. Resin Infiltration is a safe and conservative treatment option when used appropriately and recommended by your dentist.
How is Resin Infiltration different from fluoride or Curodont®?
Fluoride and Curodont® help support remineralization of early enamel changes, while Resin Infiltration physically penetrates and seals the lesion to help stop further progression. Your dentist will recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your child's specific needs.
